I have a quick question regarding a gluten-free diet. As someone who frequently suffers from sinus and ear infections and often battles unexplained periods of fatigue and lethargy, I am fairly certain that switching to a gluten-free diet will lead t…

James, In a way, I'm sorry that I directed you to the First Endurance line of products. Because, as I'm sure you can now tell, once you give them a fair shake in your training, racing and recovery, it's difficult to go without them again! But either…

Brandon, Thank you for the email. It's good to hear from you, and I hope all is going well. I know that in my post I spent a lot of time discussing heart rate, but I also monitor power during my 70.3 races, and on this particular occasion in Augusta…

Justin, If it was 'just one of those days' then I would wonder about your swim and early bike pacing. If you were using a powermeter and the first 35k was above your typical 70.3 pacing, then you may have gone a little hard to make it to the front g…

AJ, At 220 pounds you no doubt need more calories than the typical endurance athlete. You would do well with the EFS Liquid Shot. At 400 calories in a single flask you can easily carry 3 flasks (1,200 calories) and they are easy to digest. I also wa…

At 6'2" and 220 I'm conscious of making sure I get enough calories in on my bike rides. I take in something every 30-min. I use a combination of gels, clif bars, EFS, and Ultragen. My biggest challenge is on a 4-hour+ bike ride I run out of beverage…

I know this will sound ridiculous to all of you but here is something I have found that works for me to get extra calories in -- toaster pastries (like Pop-Tarts) and fig bars. I am an average sized triathlete (5'11", 160lbs) but sweat more than ave…

Matt, One key item you pointed out that many, many could learn from is. 'Simple is good for me.' I find too many Ironman athlete over-engineer their nutrition plan. Start with a very simple plan and build from there if necessary. Thanks for the grea…

One thing I do is fill a water bottle with the Liquid shot for long rides but I try and not do this all the time so I dont get sick of the flavor although I dig it! I used it from start to finish in my last 70.3 and wasnt sick of it. But for other d…

Robert likely can provide more insight than me to the issue of calorie intake per hour, but I do think your numbers are correct for most athletes. However, I do think that if, upon experimentation, you find that you can ingest more than that amount…

I struggle with the same issue compounded by a high sweat rate of 48+ oz per hour and need for higher than normal electrolyte replacement. I'm 6'5" and 190. Over what time frame are you ingesting the 800 - 1000 calories? Everyone is different. I ha…

Justin, I can tell you from talking to many of our Ironman, Cycling and Ultra Running Pro's that many have success using a serving of Ultragen. Though, I have not gotten feedback about creating an Ultragen concoction, athletes do like to use a full…

Have any athletes created concoctions using First Endurance products that provide a heavier dose of calories and nutrients to satisfy those athletes with faster metabolisms? I am somewhat cursed as a larger athlete (6'3" and 168lbs) with a super fa…

About me
A professional triathlete with a strong competitive background in both swimming and running, focusing on the individual medley in the pool and posting a personal-best 4:16 mile in high school. However, my true passion was soccer, and I ultimately signed to play soccer in college.

Before my college career could begin, was diagnosed with a severe heart condition after experiencing a series of fainting episodes during competition. The condition, known as Long QT Syndrome, brought a premature end to my career as an athlete.

Graduated from Duke University and received my J.D. from the UCLA School of Law. Upon graduation from law school, I began a career as a corporate attorney specializing in Mergers & Acquisitions.

Competitive fires came back while working as an attorney, and after visiting a series of doctors, was cleared to participate in endurance sports again so long as my health was regularly and consistently monitored.

After a few years as an amateur triathlete, I moved into the professional ranks in 2008 and will begin my second year as a pro in 2009.

Ironman 70.3 Augusta: Race Nutrition Report

I just completed Ironman 70.3 Augusta yesterday with a performance that I would call marginal, so I wanted to call attention to my raceday nutrition in the hopes that my consumptions will prove informative for some and perhaps help to answer questions for me as well.

My morning breakfast breakfast was as follows (~2hr before race start): 1.5 cups slow-cooked oatmeal, 2 cups mixed fruit (raspberries, blueberries, banana, strawberries & orange), 1 serving First Endurance Ultragen (Orange Crea… Continue

Ironman 70.3 Florida: Race Nutrition

In response to my race report from Ironman 70.3 Florida, Robert has asked that I post my race nutrition for the half-Ironman. Typically, my nutrition on race day never changes, so this post can likely apply to any 70.3 race that I do.

As an larger athlete (6' 3" and 169 lbs.) with a very high metabolism, I often struggle getting in enough calories during a race. If I were to survive on gels alone, I would be taking one every 10 minutes or so, which sounds like more of a chore than something tha… Continue

Ironman 70.3 Florida: A Lost Opportunity, But Many Lessons Learned

Too often as professional triathletes we get caught up exclusively in results. In many instances, where we finish in a particular race is all that matters. For those elite few at the top echelon of the sport who contend for wins on a weekly basis, that sort of singular focus is likely necessary. However, for the many of us currently chasing those elite few and who one day hope to knock at that door, judging a race only by where we finish probably is detrimental to our overall success in the long… Continue
